Saturday, 2nd July 2011 – Rescue Merdeka Review Benefit Show @ MCPA Hall, KL

Merdeka Review is an independent Chinese news portal which is facing closure due to a lack of funds, especially when its main backers pulled out in May.

“The site faces closure after their sponsors, a group of businessmen, withdrew support in what is believed to be an attempt to mollify critics of Merdeka Review’s coverage of China’s treatment of dissidents. The backers are believed to be unhappy with recent coverage of China’s treatment of dissident writer Ai Weiwei who disappeared two months ago after being detained by the authorities. The site had also ruffled feathers with coverage of events in Tibet.”HERE

Those who wish to donate to the survival of MERDEKA REVIEW can do so at the following bank accounts under the Merdeka Review Sdn Bhd name.

Saturday, 25th June 2011- Transcendence, in Solidarity w/ Rumah Api @ Rumah Api, Ampang

The ol’ Gudang Noisy is dead, but from the ashes there’s a new entity, RUMAH API and this is a benefit for the DIY space, in conjunction with the Trancendence Tour by Singapore’s PAZAHORA.

In solidarity with Rumah Api, the phoenix arising from the ashes of Gudang Noisy + a part of PAZAHORA’s Transcendence Tour.

from S&A:

In solidarity; Rumah Api.

Shock&Awe! is honoured to present you Pazahora, in conjunction with their Transcendence tour at recently rejuvenated Rumah Api. You might wonder, why Rumah Api as there are lot of venues around Kuala Lumpur that might have better sound system and complete facilities, and are more strategically located. The answer is simple;

Because Rumah Api is all we have. For punks by the punks.

We at Shock&Awe! Media believe that the initiative of keeping autonomous space for DIY punk empowerment should be kept alive. Because this is our alternative avenue. And let us question ourselves where do we stand without the existence of all these alternatives? Do we conform? Do we end up like the rest? Bear in mind that all of this are choices, not mandatory.

We all know that Rumah Api (formerly known as Gudang Noisy) had experienced frequent occurrence of finance instability almost to the brink of loss. They did asked for donation, organized benefit shows, basically doing whatever necessary to save the space. They are aware of the risk of failures but they refuse to surrender cause they believe that they

rather be forgotten than remembered for giving in.

And this is from all of us who still believe;
Rumah Api, this is for you.

With alliances:

PAZAHORA – Singapore’s transcending punk.

post show report:

We played three songs, just like what we rehearsed. pretty run-of-the-mill, AKA the boring set. i had to use a small amp which was jacked up straight into the house system, the same with Fendi’s bass and that put a damper on things. Our set was the last part of the 2nd show. Before us we saw ThinkTadpoleThink play for a bit, went outside for a smoke, went back in to see a bit of Furniture’s set, after which they had Furious George and friends and after that, the Buka Kolektif featuring Sharon doing something with the audience.

We left as soon as we’re done; gone off to PJ for dinner before sending Fendi back. The next day I heard the show got about 2k something for the cause. Not bad!

We got at the show late, as it was pissing with rain and the roads were flooding and shit. We went to SIS Studio again to practice. The guy running it opened up the studio just for us, and that’s pretty cool. We like the space; big room, decent equipment; Fendi started using Manan’s Box of Metal pedal and Bullet brought his new snare drums; so the sound’s very good.

For the first time I brought a small tripod to record the band on the H2. Easy setup and the sound is great, better than putting the H2 on the floor as per usual.
